HPHPNNYMS

The subject of this painting came as a suggestion from a friend and continues an exploration of immediacy and a frozen moment in time. Also, my first piece to incorporate text.

SWRV

SWRV is a further exploration of street signs and they ways they may or may not relate to something else and how viewers interpret that connection. This piece was done for the show at Thumbprint Gallery.

WNDWS

I’ve always liked Spy Optic’s advertising slogan, “windows for your head.” Since I have nothing better to do with myself, I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time pondering that concept and the distractions of technology and the always-connected world that we actively partake in on a daily basis.

CTHDRL

If I’m flying somewhere for vacation, it’s always New York City. There is so much to see in the city, so much to do and so much to eat. It never gets old, even the old stuff becomes cooler with time.

When I was young, my great uncle would buy me plastic models of military fighters, past and present. I loved putting them together and, looking back, it’s actually not too different than what I’m doing now. I painted individual pieces of the model with spray paint, and assembling them can be just as tedious of an art as cutting stencils.

Whether or not you agree with current or previous policies, decisions, or involvement in wars, I think it’s important to recognize the sacrifices that the members of our military make on a daily basis. They signed up to selflessly defend the every day status quo that many of us simply take for granted.

If there was an award for one style of shoes that are available in the most styles and colors, Chuck Taylors would probably win it. Everyone from my generation has owned at least one pair at some point in time, and they’re probably one of the most imitated shoe designs ever.

The Yankees are the most storied franchise in professional sports. As a result, everyone has an opinion about them – you either love them or hate them. They’re my favorite baseball team and whether or not you like them, it’s easy to recognize Derek Jeter as a standout player – one of the classiest people both on and off the field, a personification of what the Yankees should be about.

This silhouette was originally created by me years ago as a t-shirt design that never got made. Five years later, added some credit card numbers and put it on canvas and here I am, reminiscing about the golden days.

I grew up with Star Trek and Star Wars. My family would sit down and watch episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation while more normal families were watching something more conventional (read: less nerdy) like Family Matters.

My friend Meyek plays a lot of poker. He’s a very successful player and seems to always be winning. He once told me he swam across the English Channel, but he says a lot of things. I spent a while learning how to play properly, and I became better than him and beat him a bunch of times (I say a lot of things, too).

TRNZT

Since I was a child, I’ve always loved New York City. The movie Home Alone was a favorite of mine, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles called it home – it just seemed like the place to be. Now, I’m still just as enamored by the city that never sleeps and the world’s most complicated subway system.

When Forrest Gump was sitting on that park bench, he was in a little Georgia town called Savannah. When Forrest Gump was being filmed, I was living in a little Georgia town called Savannah. Besides being one of my favorite movies, it’s definitely one of the best films made during my lifetime.

Johnny Depp has played a wide variety of very different and usually very strange characters. I’d see him in just about any movie with a few exceptions – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is basically a horror movie for children and I can’t watch it, and I can’t correctly pronounce Chocolat without laughing, so I won’t be seeing that one either.

This painting was originally created to be auctioned at the 2009 Switchfoot Bro-Am. Tony Gwynn is everyone’s favorite San Diegan. My friend Junior and his family invited me to Tony Gwynn’s final game at Qualcomm and I still remember being blown away by all of his accomplishments on the field and now that I’m older, I’m paying more attention to all of his contributions off the field as well.

Originality is something I take great pride in. Stealing someone else’s style or concepts is a cardinal sin in my book. However, inspiration is something else altogether, and sometimes leads to moments of brilliance. I can be insightful.
