ABOUT

PURPOSE

I strongly believe that everyone should own an original painting, and that far too few people actually do. I also believe in the purpose of street art. Street artists work in public spaces for the benefit of the community. They bring color to places that otherwise wouldn’t have it, art to places that can’t afford it, and thought to mindless daily activities like a commute. The inherent problem of street art, of course, is vandalism.

As an artist that is heavily influenced by street art, I have decided to bring my art to the streets in a way that retains the intrinsic artistic value, and yet can’t be misconstrued as vandalism. Instead of painting directly on the walls, I will paint on canvases and hang the finished paintings on those blank walls. This would place art in unexpected places in an unexpected format and allow people to simply take it right off the wall and keep it. Free. Done deal.

MEANS

This project is supported by the actual sales of my paintings in the gallery that is conveniently located right here, on the site you’re currently reading. I will hang up paintings selected from the gallery as well as other new paintings that will make their debut on the streets. I’ll hang paintings approximately every two weeks. Eventually, I’d like to increase the frequency of the installations. The paintings that I hang will all be the #1 or #2 painting in the edition, if that means something to you.

OTHER CITIES

I live in San Diego, so that’s where most of the paintings will be hung. However, if I’m in another town, I’ll bring paintings along and let you know. Tell your non-San Diego friends I’m coming so they can find out when a painting is hung.

SUGGEST A LOCATION

Obviously, I’d like to get permission for every piece I hang. If you have a building in a reasonably active public area in San Diego and would like to participate, please contact me.

COMPLAIN ABOUT A LOCATION

I do not respond to complaints about painting locations. One of the goals of this project is to show that there are alternatives to destructive vandalism. If you’re not happy about where I hung a painting, just take it down. Better yet, take it home. Give it to a friend.

PARTICIPATION BY OTHERS

Street artists are in a unique position to give away work. We can recreate our work over and over again, almost exactly the same as the first. They’re still original, hand made works. Street artists are already putting up their work for free, so the only additional cost to the artists is the price of the canvas.
